Farmingdale Residents Vote to Approve $36 Million Bond For Sports Complex, Aquatic Center

The complex will be constructed at the Weldon E. Howitt Middle School.

Farmingdale residents recently voted to approve to pass the proposed $36 million bond to create the first ever community-focused public school sports complex and aquatic center on Long Island.

A total of 1,610 residents voted to approve the bond while 1,390 residents voted against the bond during the vote last Tuesday, Newsday reports.

The complex, which will be constructed at the Weldon E. Howitt Middle School on 70 Vancott Avenue will include both competitive and community pools as well as two synthetic turfs for baseball, softball, football, soccer and lacrosse.

In addition, the complex would also include a competitive track and stadium lighting.

Despite the bond approval, any district debt service taxes would be reduced by $71 a year for the average Farmingdale homeowner. The debt on the proposed project would not kick in until the 2021-2022 school year.

The project will also be part of the Village of Farmingdale's plan to revitalize the local downtown area.
