Farmingdale State College To Host "Give Kids A Smile" Event

Free dental hygiene care and oral health education will be provided to children in Suffolk and Nassau.

FARMINGDALE, NY — The Dental Hygiene Department at Farmingdale State College will host its 13th annual "Give Kids a Smile" event Friday, February 21, from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. (snow date Feb. 28), the college announcec. Children ages 1 – 17 and their parents/caregivers are invited to visit the Dental Hygiene Care Center in Gleeson Hall to receive free oral screenings, dental cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, and oral health education, provided by faculty and students from Farmingdale’s Dental Hygiene Department.

Speech pathologists will be on hand at the inter-professional event. Students and faculty from the College’s Nursing program will be available to provide blood-pressure screenings for parents/caregivers. Students and faculty from the Medical Laboratory Science Department will also be demonstrating proper hand-washing techniques.

"Give Kids a Smile" is sponsored nationally by the American Dental Association and was developed to provide oral health care to under-served children. Roughly 200 children, parents, and volunteers are expected to attend the event. Sponsors include Henry Schein, Colgate, and KaVo Kerr.

The Dental Hygiene program at Farmingdale State College is part of the Theresa Patnode Santmann School of Health Sciences, which enrolls nearly 700 students. The department offers both the associate in applied science and bachelor of science degrees in dental hygiene. All treatment provided is supervised by registered dental hygienists and dentists employed by Farmingdale State College.
