Farmingdale Students Explore Native American Artistic Techniques

Farmingdale High School Artist-in-Residence Teaches Creative Pottery Lesson

Farmingdale High School students recently worked with Artist-in-Residence Cliff Mendelsson to create ceramics, sculptures and 3D designs. Mendelsson introduced students to Native American pottery and coiling techniques as he taught students how to sculpt functional vessels. Students worked with air-dry clay, a new sculptural medium. Mendelsson discussed the use of texture in Native American pottery and showed students how to create sculptural textures. After hand-building from clay, students fired, painted and then re-fired their pieces to produce a finished work of art. This program is part of an Arts in Education program in the District to help students explore their creativity.
