Farmingdale High School students Ashley Burbano and Urooba Abid were recently awarded 1,500 dollars in scholarships from Creative Empowerment, Inc. for their submissions to the 2016/2017 Creative Empowerment Arts Contest. This year’s theme centered on social awareness, and was named “Our Hopes, Our Dreams, Our Fears, Our Solutions.” Students throughout Long Island in grades 8—12 participated, demonstrating not only creative talent but also depth of thought in their artistic efforts to draw attention to ongoing humanitarian issues.
Ashley Burbano won first place with her submission, a painting entitled “Silent Syrian Crisis.” As the first place winner she received a 1,000 dollar scholarship to attend the college of her choice. Urooba Abid was awarded as a runner-up with her submission, a painting entitled “Slaves to the System.” As a runner-up she received a 500 dollar scholarship to attend the college of her choice. Both students will receive their scholarship checks during the Farmingdale High School Senior Awards Program.
