Farmingdale Teen Struck, Killed by Car on Bethpage State Parkway

BREAKING: The 16-year-old was walking with a friend on the parkway late Saturday night when he was struck, police say.

A 16-year-old boy from Farmingdale was struck and killed by a car on the Bethpage State Parkway late Saturday night, State Police said.

According to police, John J. Ortiz and 17-year-old Michael Rizzo, of North Massapequa, were observed walking on the southbound parkway about a quarter-mile north of the Southern State Parkway when Ortiz was struck by a 2006 Toyota at about 11:27 p.m.

The driver of the Toyota didn't see Ortiz, who was was walking partially in the right southbound lane of the parkway, striking him with the front passenger side of his vehicle.

Ortiz was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by emergency room personnel. Rizzo was not injured.

The Bethpage State Parkway was closed for several hours in both directions. The driver remained at scene and the investigation is continuing. No criminal charges have been filed.

State Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident to contact Troop L Headquarters at Farmingdale at 631-756-3300.
