Farmingdale Unites for The Barclays' Tournament

Merchants and officials will take advantage of expected crowds for tournament.

Farmingdale is busily prepping for the crowds expected to attend at nearby . All over Main Street, businesses, officials, and fire fighters are sprucing up to make an impression on the thousands who will pass through Farmingdale in August.

"We had a big increase in business when the US Open was here in 2009," said president Debbie Podolski. "It's really going to be a draw this year and we hope for the same increase in business for the merchants."

plans on placing a large sign on the Bartone warehouse near the LIRR station pointing commuters toward Main Street. Though many who plan on attending the tournament will be bused straight to Bethpage State Park and bypass Main Street, a sizable crowd is expected to filter into town by train. Those who are driving themselves to the tournament will also be encouraged to stick around and enjoy all Main Street has to offer.

"It will have a big arrow pointing people in the direction of the Main Street stores so that maybe they will head to the restaurants or go shopping," said Podolski.

Farmingdale officials are currently perfecting a parking plan for the residential area surrounding the course, as well as collaborating with the Chamber of Commerce to erect the sign near the LIRR. If the sign isn't eyecatching enough, the MTA has also approved a tent that the Chamber of Commerce will place at the station. Podolski said they would offer promotional items as a draw for people to take a stroll down nearby Main Street.

The is also joining in the fun by holding a classic car show on Friday, Aug. 24. The fire department held an inaugural car show earlier this month and hopes holding one during The Barclays' will make the village a full blown attraction.

The Barclays' PGA FedEx Championship chose Farmingdale Fire Department as a "Ticket Fore Charity" organization. The and a portion of the proceeds will be donated back to the department.

The Barclays Golf Tournament will be held Aug. 21 through Aug. 26.
