Farmingdale Village Celebrates Annual Tree Lighting

The Village of Farmingdale community gathered on the Village Green on Friday night to light the , a local symbol of the holiday season.

This year’s festivities included holiday songs sung by the third grade choir from and the music of the South Shore Brass Ensemble. The ceremony was moved from Tuesday to Friday because of rain.

The tricentennial tree was donated by the and was originally in front of the Village Hall. It was blocking the view of the Village Green so the tree was moved to its current location, where it is decorated each year for the holidays.

“It is a very important part of the community and we’ve been doing it for 23 years,” said Mildred Johnston, the president of the Farmingdale-Bethpage Historical Society.

With help from the Historical Society, the Beautification Committee and the staff of Farmingdale Village, the tree was lit and the village was decorated for the holidays, creating a festive atmosphere for the residents.

“It’s a great community and a lot of spirit. The kids were wonderful,” said Mayor George Starkie. “It doesn’t get much better than this. Christmas, Hanukkah, whatever you celebrate, it’s all about the kids.”

Hundreds of residents come out to see the tree lighting.

“It’s a very meaningful celebration for the season,” said Johnston.

“Whatever you’re celebrating, just make it a good, happy, healthy one and enjoy,” said Starkie.
