Federal Shutdown Would Not Affect Republic Airport, Airpower Museum

Air Traffic Control is considered an essential service, immune from the shutdown.

and the will remain in operation if a shutdown of federal services takes place Friday, according to airport officials.

"Our understanding is that Air Traffic Control will not be affected by a shutdown, so no impact to Republic," said Gary Lewi, spokesman for the Farmingdale-based airport.

The airport sees 300 operations per day on average, 150 landing and 150 taking off, according to Airport Director Michael Geiger. During busy seasons, operations can reach 600 flights per day.

In addition to Air Traffic Control, U.S. military forces, the Postal Service and federal law enforcement agencies would also not be affected directly by the shutdown, federal officials said Thursday.

The primary purpose of ATC systems worldwide is to prevent air collisions and it  also plays a security and defense role in the U.S.

Lewi said the shutdown would also not affect the Airpower Museum, which is funded through state grants, corporate underwriting, personal philanthropy and admission fees. Utilities, aircraft maintenance, building repair and exhibit construction are all funded through these benefactors.

Republic Airport is a general aviation airport operated by the New York State Department of Transportation. The airport does not provide commercial flights and generally serves private propeller planes used for recreation, business travelers using jets and flight training operations.
