Festivities on Tap for National Drinking Water Week

The Long Island Water Conference (LIWC) will be celebrating the vital role that water plays in daily life and in local communities during National Drinking Water Week, May 4-8. The LIWC will mark the occasion with their 30th annual Best-Tasting Water Contest, taking place at Farmingdale State College May 5 to May 7, 2015 from 9am – 2pm.

“Long Island’s water suppliers work diligently to ensure that our water is safe and tastes great,” stated Michael O’Connell, Chairman of the Long Island Water Conference. “National Drinking Water Week is an exciting way to get everyone thinking about our drinking water and why it’s important to maintain its cleanliness.”

The LIWC will invite students and the general public to sample tap water from several different water suppliers from both Nassau and Suffolk County and vote on which tastes best. More than two-dozen water suppliers from across Long Island will participate.

A well-maintained water system is critical to the success of any community. The local drinking water industry creates jobs, attracts industry and investment and provides for the health and welfare of citizens in ways ranging from disease prevention to fire suppression. National Drinking Water Week serves as a reminder of how important it is to conserve and protect our natural water supplies.

“We hope to increase awareness of the drinking water supply so that residents protect the natural resource and do not waste it,” O’Connell added. “We want pure, great-tasting water for generations in the future to enjoy as well.”
