MASSAPEQUA PARK, NY — Gina Pellettiere's funeral mass was scheduled for 10:45 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Lourdes, at 855 Carmans Road, Massapequa Park.

Pellettiere, 43, was the single mother of a 2-year-old son, Joseph. She was one of two casualties of a bus crash in Orange County on Sept. 21. Pellettire, the band director of Farmingdale High School, was on her way to the school's annual band camp trip in Greeley, Pennsylvania, when their bus overturned and tumbled down a 50-foot ravine.

Beatrice "Bea" Ferrari, 77, of Farmingdale, a retired teacher who chaperoned the trip each year, also died in the crash. Ferrari's funeral was held Wednesday.

"For obvious reasons, we will not be broadcasting either of these funerals in any of our schools," Farmingdale Superintendent Paul Defendini said in a letter to the community. "Instead, we see this as an opportunity for parents to provide an emotionally safe environment to watch these ceremonies in the sanctity of their homes. You may want to consider arranging small groups of students and parents in a smaller and more intimate setting."

A live stream was also set up for Ferrari's mass, as the district anticipated "very well-attended" services for the two educators.

"In all likelihood, St. Killian's and Our Lady of Lourdes will not be able to handle the volume and the overflow will extend outside the church and into the recesses of local neighborhoods," Defendini said. "With thanks to Monseigneur Rowan and Monseigneur Lisante and in collaboration with our amazing audio-visual staff, we will be able to provide a live link to both ceremonies."

Defendini said he was reminded of "American Pie," sung by Don McClean in 1971.

"My favorite line happens towards the end of the song," he said. "A football team is attempting to take the field after halftime but the marching band refuses to yield. I cannot tell you when that may happen but what a sight that will be."
