Girls Soccer: Farmingdale 2011 Preview
Key returning starters, large crop of junior talent highlight Farmingdale squad.
The Farmingdale girls soccer squad, fresh off a successful post season run that didn’t end til the semifinals, returns more than a half dozen starters and plenty of other experienced talent, with hopes to continue their increasingly competitive position in Conference 1 play.
According to coach David Otto the Dalers look to continue their pattern of control soccer, maintaining possession and making opponents "respond to us." "We like to play a control game,” he said. “We had a good season with it last year, and so far it’s looking good for us this year.”
It’s a view that has Daler fans on pins and needles as key matchups happen early in the season against Oceanside and MacArthur. “Those are both away games, played at night,” said Otto. “The kids get up for those games. They’ll be an early test, and help set the tone for the season.”

- Amanda Turtorro, junior, forward
- Alexis Panriello, junior, defender
Position Breakdown:
With the graduation of all-everything Kelly McPartland, the Dalers have big shoes to fill, according to coach Otto. Fortunately, he’s got a lot of talent coming back - 12 starters from last year’s semi-final finishers, including seven starters. “Reynolds is a great playmaker and a strong leader,” he said. “Turtorro was one of our goal-scoring leaders last year.” On defense, Otto added, “Hadnagy is solid, very steady. And Panariello is very strong, she has a great head for the game.”
Development of goalie Kaitlin Gaghan, a senior in goal, will be significant. “Katilin started some games for us in goal last year,” said Otto. ‘We’ll be solid there. She has good command of the field.”
Expectations:
With a cohort of 19 juniors on the squad, Otto is hopeful for a good year. “This is an exceptional group,” he said. “Over the years, and I’ve been with the program 24 years, I’ve seen a lot more involvement with club soccer in town. This has translated for us into better teams. It’s obviously beneficial -- and this year’s team is a good example.”
Key Games:
- Sept. 14 Farmingdale @ MacArthur, 7 p.m.
- Sept. 26 Massapequa @ Farmingdale, 4:30 p.m.
