Happy Thanksgiving: What's Open, Closed in Farmingdale

Happy Thanksgiving, Farmingdale.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, there is much to be grateful for.

Today is a national holiday, which means all federal, state and local government offices are closed. Banks and the financial markets are closed. There is no postal delivery.

But if you're heading to the big parade in Manhattan, the Long Island Rail Road is operating on a holiday schedule, but has added 22 additional trains systemwide for those headed to and from the parade. Off peak fares apply Thursday as well as Friday, when the LIRR will operate on a near normal weekday schedule. Extra cars are being added to trains.

Most supermarkets in Farmingdale open Thursday morning but will close by mid-afternoon. Super Shop & Stop in South Farmingdale, for example, is open from 6 a.m.-3 p.m.

The same is true with the area's most popular eateries: For example, Bollinger's Family Restaurant on Main Street downtown is open from 8 a.m. until noon; The Turnpike Diner on Hempstead Turnpike, is open all night Wednesday and will remain open until 3 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day.

Most fine dining restaurants and even bars are closed in Farmingdale this evening, but some will open after the dinner hour. One of them, the Wild Wild West Saloon plans to open between 7:30-8 p.m. for the nationally televised Jets game.
