Hurricane Spawns Closings in Farmingdale

Hurricane Sandy's wrath will be felt across Long Island Monday and many businesses and schools are closed in advance of her expected wind damage and torrential rain.

Here's what's closed in and near Farmingdale:

• The Farmingdale School District has cancelled all classes and activities Monday. Go to the district's website for further details.
• The Long Island Rail Road, along with the rest of the MTA system, is closed until further notice. There are no trains to or from Farmingdale or nearby Hicksville stations.
• Many retail stores will not open or will close early. For example, Starbucks Coffee is closed, along with all the Starbucks in the Metropolitan area. Most supermarkets say they will remain open as long as possible. Much of this will depend on whether electrical power is available.

What's open and operating in Plainview:

• Farmingdale's fire departments will be at the ready. Residents are urged to call 911 only in life-threatening emergencies. For trees down, roadside issues or other non-life threatening concerns, Nassau County residents should dial 1-888-684-4274 for assistance.
• The U.S. Postal Service is expected to go on as usual unless mail trucks are unable to deliver their parcels to local post offices.
• The floor of the New York Stock Exchange is closed, but electronic trading is scheduled to go on as usual. Most banks are expected to remain open; again their status will depend on the availability of electrical power.
