Long Island Native Brings Internationally Acclaimed Artwork to Farmingdale State College

Kevin O'Callaghan is known for his large pop culture-inspired sculptures.

Long Island native and internationally acclaimed artist Kevin O’Callaghan will display his work in an exhibition at Farmingdale State College this Fall.

O’Callaghan, a 3-D designer, sculptor and educator, will have his work featured at the Memorial Gallery in an exhibition titled MONUMENTAL : The Reimagined World of Kevin O’Callaghan from Sept. 15 to Nov. 8.

O’Callaghan, who grew up in Baldwin, is known for his large pop culture-inspired sculptures.

Here are few artistic milestones accomplished by O’Callaghan:

  • His Art is…Healing poster, a tribute to the heroes of 9/11, is located in the Library of Congress.
  • He is founder and chairman of the 3-D design program at Manhattan’s School of Visual Arts.
  • He owns a Distinguished Teacher Award, and has won the Art Directors Club Platinum Teacher Award several times.
  • He was inducted into the The Art Directors Club’s Hall of Fame in 2012.
  • He has created pieces for MTV, Toyota, Warner Brothers records, Nickelodeon and the History Channel.
  • He has worked in TV and film and has worked on more than 150 music videos.
  • His book, MONUMENTAL (Abrams Books, 2010), contains hundreds of images of his work.
  • The exhibition Yugo Next — an O’Callaghan-student collaboration that featured 29 much-maligned Yugo automobiles reconfigured into gigantic functional objects such as toasters, showers, and pianos — was toured by more than two million people. The National Endowment for the Arts called it “one of the greatest examples of public art.”

His exhibit at Memorial Gallery, located in Hale Hall, is free and open to the public during the weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

O’Callaghan will also be at Farmingdale State College on Tuesday, Oct. 13 to discuss his work. The lecture will be held in Gleeson Hall Room 104 at 4:20 p.m. A reception for O’Callaghan is scheduled for 5–7 p.m. in Hale Hall.
