Men's Basketball Blows Out Undefeated Mount Saint Vincent, 104-75
Rams use a 19-2 run, strong defense to give Dolphins their first loss of the season.
's Josh Smith scored 21 points and the Rams (5-5, 4-1) defense held the previously undefeated Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins (10-1, 5-1) to 35.2% shooting en route to a 104-75 home victory.
The Rams came out firing, scoring the game's first six points and causing four turnovers on defense before their opponents scored a single point. Mount Saint Vincent took a two point lead at 10-8, the only lead they would have.
Turning Point: Farmingdale State, down by only a basket, took over this one early. Less than five minutes in, the Rams went on a 19-2 run where both the offense and defense clicked perfectly. Smith scored 8 points, including a four point play, and Dyshaun Flournoy scored 7 of his 17 points during the run. Defensively, the Rams stifled the Dolphins, not allowing a field goal in nearly six minutes of play, causing them to miss ten straight shots and committing four turnovers during that span. From there, the lead expanded to 22 at half and turned into a blowout.
Heroes: Josh Smith was strong in the first half when the contest was decided, scoring 15 of his game-high 21 points in the opening stanza. Smith had more assists (5) than missed shots (4).
Flournoy had another strong game before suffering an injury with 8 minutes left. While reaching back to catch a pass, Flournoy came up hobbling and laid on the court for several minutes while trainers worked on him. The injury was only a cramp and he is expected to be fine for the next game on Thursday.
Jermaine Abraham chipped in with 16 points on 7-11 shooting and 3 rebounds. With the game long since decided, Abraham attempted to slam dunk a few shots. None were successful.
Quotable: Coach Erik Smiles on this game being the biggest win of the year: "Right now yes, absolutely. They were 10-0 coming into this game. Hopefully this will propel us down the road."
Bottom Line: Against their toughest conference opponent to date (the only undefeated overall), Farmingdale State imposed their will. Offensively the team shot 52.7% and the defense held a hot shooting opponent to only 35.2%. Since joining the NCAA Division III in 2000, Farmingdale State has not lost to Mount Saint Vincent, a record of 13-0.
What's Next?: Jan 6, 8 p.m. @ Old Westbury (2-6, 1-3). The Rams have a light conference opponent before taking on two teams ahead of them in the standings (Mount Saint Mary and Purchase).
Key Stats:
Smith: 7-11, 21 points, 5 assists.
