Nassau Firefighter Lit Multiple Fires: Police

Police say he was lighting fires for more than a year, but not where people lived.

A Bethpage firefighter was arrested on Sunday after a long investigation determined he had lit multiple fires in the neighborhood over more than a year, police say.

According to Nassau County Arson Bomb Squad, Christopher Cordeiro, 20, of Hoover Lane, and a member of the Bethpage Fire Department, was responsible for the following fires:

  • June 25, 2017: Molotov cocktail fire in a sump across from 25 Arthur Ave.
  • March 1, 2018: Dumpster fire at 67 West Millpage Drive
  • Aug. 5, 2018: Abandoned house fire at 285 Stewart Ave.
  • Aug. 10, 2018: Fire in wooded area next to 96 Broadway
  • Aug. 19, 2018: Shed fire at 121 North Hermann Ave.

Cordeiro was arrested without incident at the Bethpage Fire House. He is charged with third-degree arson, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, fourth-degree arson and two counts of fifth-degree arson. He is scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Monday.
