Nassau Man Knocked Another Unconscious, Then Ran Him Over: Police

Police say an argument in a parking lot escalated to violence, leaving two men injured in the hospital

A Merrick man was arrested for assault after police say he knocked a man unconscious and then ran him over with his car in Farmingdale on Sunday.

According to police, Jonathan Bencosme, 28, of Narwood Avenue, got into an argument with a group of people in the parking lot behind 333 Main St. around 3:15 a.m. Police say the argument escalated, and Bencosme punched a 34-year-old man in the face, knocking him unconscious.

Police say Bencosme then got into his car, reversed it, and began accelerating toward the group, including the unconscious man on the ground and a 27-year-old man who was helping him. Police say Bencosme struck the 27-year-old on his left side, causing him to be thrown several feet. Bencosme also ran over the unconscious man, police say, with both the front and rear passenger-side tires. Then Bencosme sped off down Rose Street, according to police.

The unconscious man suffered a cranial hemorrhage, skull fracture and had both arms broken, requiring surgery. The 27-year-old suffered pain to his shoulders, hips and knees. Both were taken to a hospital for treatment.

Two days later, on Feb. 20, Bencosme surrendered himself to police and was arrested. He is charged with first- and second-degree assault, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and first-degree reckless endangerment. He was arraigned on Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead.
