One Week Later, Here's Where Farmingdale Stands

One week after Hurricane Sandy tore apart our community, here's a general update of where things stand in Farmingdale.

School Update:

Farmingdale Schools are closed Monday and Tuesday. The district is following the recommendation of the Nassau County Council of School Districts, which believes public safety conditions have not stabilized sufficiently to resume classes. We'll update you.

Power Outages

As of early Monday morning, LIPA reported that about 1,300 customers in Farmingdale and South Farmingdale remain without power, considerably better than many other Long Island communities. LIPA says 90 percent of all its customers will see power restored by Wednesday.

Gas Lines:

They are still with us and authorities say the problem will continue through the week. As more stations get power, the lines will gradually diminish. There is no shortage of gasoline, just stations pumping it.

The Election:

Tuesday is Election Day and it will go on. Some residents may find themselves voting in different polling places. We'll update you when we know more. Patch will have full election coverage Tuesday into Wednesday.

What's Open:

Downtown Farmingdale has power and its businesses are open.

Village Hall is operational. It plans a work session Monday night. The storm is the first item on its agenda.

Many other area firms are open for business. They include most supermarkets, convenience stores and restaurants: They include:

• on Route 109, between Dunkin Donuts and McDonalds, is open weekdays from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Owner Glenn Messina welcomes visitors to come in and charge your laptops and cell phone.
• The Farmingdale Music Center. Lesson schedule has resumed as normal. They have coffee and charging station available.
• Dolan Associates Agency, Allstate Insurance Company, at 192B Merritts Road, is open.
• A Taste of Long Island is open for business, operating normal business hours (10a.m.-6 p.m., daily.)

Public Transportation:

The LIRR is operating on a limited schedule that continues to improve. Trains are expected to be crowded, but running. About 80 percent of the subway system is running in New York. NICE buses are running on Long Island.
