Pollution in Farmingdale

Long Island's manufacturing past is coming back to haunt residents.

Officials and residents gathered at the Thursday night to once again from the former Grumman site in Bethpage that's drifting toward South Shore water supplies.

Grumman owned an aircraft manufacturing plant in Bethpage until its closure in 1996. The company reportedly buried industrial waste on the grounds which eventually seeped into groundwater. These waste plumes have been slowly migrating southward ever since, according to the DEC, threatening the ground-based water supplies of multiple towns in its path, including Farmingdale, Bethpage, Wantagh, Seaford, Massapequa, Bellmore and Merrick.

This coming week, the Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public hearing at the Farmingdale library on its proposal to change part of its plan to build treatment systems for groundwater at the Liberty Superfund site. The agency said recent monitoring data shows that the contamination levels in the portion of ground water that was contaminated by the dry cleaner site have dropped significantly.
