Rams Scoreboard: Farmingdale State Teams Enter NCAA Tournament

Softball and men's tennis win in the first round, exit in second.

Highlights from this week's spring sports at include two golfers scoring holes in one at the NCAA tournament and the men's tennis and softball teams winning the opening rounds of their tournaments.

Men's Golf

NCAA Tournament Second Round: The Rams shot 319 on the second day of the tournament, missing the cut by 25 strokes and ending the season despite Adam Larkin's hole in one. Larkin aced the 12th hole, a 125 yard par three. He led the team by three strokes, with a 77. Farmingdale State finishes in 31st place.

NCAA Tournament First Round: The Rams finished the first day of the tournament in 24th place, shooting 306 last Tuesday. Rich Kelly had the team's best score, bolstered by the first hole in one in the tournament in over ten years on the par three 15th. He finished two over at 74, tied for 43rd place. Larkin was a shot behind at 75 followed by Chris Arnold with 76.

Rowan 4, Farmingdale State 2 (NCAA Playoffs): The Rams committed two errors in the top of the sixth leading to four unearned runs and Farmingdale State's ouster from the NCAA Tournament on Friday. Hope Zino pitched the complete game scattering five hits and didn't allow an earned run to score, but walked four. After giving up the lead the Rams threatened in their half of the sixth, but only scored once and went down in order in the seventh to end the game. Nicole Farber went 2-3 with a run scored in her final game. Jennifer Jarczynski knocked in the team's only RBI.

Salisbury 4, Farmingdale State 0 (NCAA Playoffs): Salisbury's Erika Brittingham allowed one hit and struck out 15 in handing the Rams their first loss of the double-elimination tournament on Thursday. The Seagulls struck early, touching up Zino for three runs in the bottom of the first. Farber led off the next inning with a single and then stole second, but it would be the closest that any Ram would get to scoring for the rest of the game. Keenan Kaitlin walked in the sixth, representing the team's only other baserunner.

Men's Tennis

Williams 5, Farmingdale State 0 (NCAA Second Round): The Rams were shutout in their second round matchup against the Ephs on Saturday, ending the team's best season in program history. Farmingdale State was beaten in doubles matchups by a combined score of 24-3.

Farmingdale State 5, Marywood 3 (NCAA First Round): The Rams got the program's first NCAA Tournament win on Friday, holding off Marywood in a tough contest. Farmingdale State built up a 4-1 advantage before nearly giving it all back to the opponent. Theo Gioles held off Ethan Jones 6-3 6-2 in the clincher. Had Gioles lost, it would have forced a winner take all match that was tied at a set each when the contest ended.

Baseball

Ithaca 8, Farmingdale State 4: Ithaca scored five runs in the top of the sixth to come from behind and take game two of a doubleheader on Saturday. Down 1-0, the Rams scored four times in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead before the opponent scored seven over the next two innings. Frank Scarlato went 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored, the only Ram with multiple hits. CJ Bula took the loss, allowing five runs on three hits in just two-thirds of an inning.

Farmingdale State 2, Ithaca 1: After allowing Ithaca to tie the game at one in the top of the sixth, the Rams came right back with David Zilnicki singling in the game winning run in the bottom of the inning. Zilnicki finished 2-3 with the RBI and Danny DeVito went 2-2 with an RBI. Mike Dolce kept Ithaca in check for most of the game, allowing one run on six hits over 5.1 innings.

Outdoor Track

The Rams won four events at the Oneonta Last Chance Meet on Saturday, preparing for the ECAC Championships. Victoria Mandat was a top performer, earning a win in the 100m hurdles and also took first as part of the women's 4x100m relay team. Donnell Jones won the long jump with a leap of 6.43m and Qasim Ellis took the triple jump with a distance of 13.78m.
