Regular Season Wraps Up, Dalers Head to Playoffs

Several Farmingdale squads have reached the playoffs – and have triumphed – in winter sports.

As the 2010-2011 high school winter sports season draws to a close, a number of Farmingdale teams turned up the heat on the competition. bowling and wrestling teams both took regular season success to the next level, and the girls basketball team hopes to do the same today in their first playoff game.

Farmingdale Girls Basketball:

The Dalers persevered all season. After losing last year in the Nassau Class AA playoffs against MacArthur High School, coach Pete Cerrone led his squad to new heights this season. The girls won 11 of their 12 Conference AA-1 games this year, and had an overall 16-1 record, granting them first place in the division. Their only loss of the year occurred in early January, against a tough team, 47-38. They’ve since won ten in a row.

The Dalers were led all season by seniors Kelly McPartland and Kyra Ochwat, with support from sophomores Alexis Panariello and Nadine Hadnagy. The Dalers also had strong performing forwards Kaitlyn Brosnan and Colleen Reynolds, as well as guards Megan Meritz and Jamie Leone.

The team looks to go far in this year’s playoffs.

The Dalers received a first-round bye, and will host Elmont High School, who beat Herricks in the first round, 39-35. The game will take place today, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. at Farmingdale High School.

Farmingdale Wrestling:

At the held at Hofstra University, Farmingdale High School had three of its wrestlers finish in fourth place. Jovanny Conception placed fourth at the 145 lb. level. Despite losing in the quarterfinals at 171 lbs., Ben Rosen also took fourth place. Brendan Tenny wrestled to fourth place at 285 lbs. Finally, Josh Jeannoute fought to sixth place at 152 pounds.

Farmingdale finished in seventh place in the finals with 78.50 total points.

Farmingdale Boys Bowling:

Led by Steven Harris, the boys bowling team finished second this year in the .

The Dalers finished in first place for the regular season in their division and went with great confidence to the Nassau County High School Bowling Championship on Feb. 5 at Garden City Lanes. 

In the final game, Farmingdale lost to rival Sewanaka by just 19 pins, but still captured second place.

The Dalers got clutch performances all year from Harris, John Lombardi and Eric Kennedy, as well as from rookies like Steve Hamlin. Coach Joe Bianca noted how proud he was of this year’s group, seeing his team go from sixth place early in competition to vaulting itself all the way to second place.

The next week, senior Steven Harris knocked down 1,417 pins – 10 more than Roslyn’s Samuel Kaplen – to win the Nassau individual championship at Garden City Lanes.

Harris, whose 212 average was seventh in Nassau, had qualified for the tournament the past three years, but his previous best finish was 13th in 2010.

The top six finishers – including Harris – now comprise the Section VIII all-star team, which will be coached by Clarke High School’s Bryan Landini. They will compete in the sectional tournament March 6 in Syracuse.
