Skateboarding Ban Proposed for Residential Streets

After receiving multiple complaints from village residents, theis proposing a skateboarding ban on Fairview Road and Yoakum Street due to safety concerns.

This issue was discussed during a work session on Aug. 27. 

The board refered to the skating as "extreme" and said the boarders that use the streets are known to travel down into intersections, making the hills on both roads a hazard for both themselves and drivers.

"I'm bringing up the problem again but it is not letting up. They're constantly there. I get complaints, probably two to three a week from the skateboarding on Fairview. People are fearful of coming out of the street and whacking them," said

Trustee Thomas Ryan agreed, stating that it is hard to steer clear of the skateboarders who use the two residential streets. 

"It is bad when you're coming home at 5:30 or 6 p.m. with the sun up on Fairview. You can't see them," he said. 

The board said they have received no help from Nassau County Police regarding the issue stating that when summoned, the officers say that the skaters have a right to be there.

"Nassau County is doing nothing. It is a hazard. You hate to over regulate these things but it is a safety issue. Somebody is going to get killed. There are going to be some people upset but its getting dangerous," said Ryan.

"This is dangerous. This specific location is a safety concern to all. It's called Lenox Hills for the a reason [but] it is something we can fix," said Ekstrand.

Ekstrand added that residents have also complained about alleged trash being left behind on the two locations by skaters as well. 

The public hearing on the ban is scheduled to take place in October.
