Suffolk Bridge Overpass Renamed For Fallen State Trooper

Trooper Martin Kerins died in the line of duty in 1938 two days after a motorcycle crash.

EAST FARMINGDALE, NY — A bridge overpass on Long Island was renamed Monday in memory of a fallen New York State Police trooper.

The bridge overpass on the Southern State Parkway near Wellwood Avenue was renamed in honor of Martin Kerins, a state trooper who died in the line of duty on Aug. 23, 1938, two days after a motorcycle crash, according to state police.

Martin Kerins, the son of Trooper Martin Kerins, was born at Brunswick Hospital in August 1938 just days before the crash, where his father died of his injuries. Kerins attended the ceremony honoring his father.

The ceremony was held at Troop L Headquarters in East Farmingdale. It was led by Troop L Commander Major Stephen Udice.

NY state Sen. John Brooks, state Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre, and state Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio sponsored the legislation, which was signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul.
