New York State lawmakers have voted to allow Suffolk County to regulate taxis and other transportation companies, according to Newsday (note, paid registration required).
Though Gov. Andrew Cuomo hasn't signed the bill yet, the bill would give Suffolk the power to regulate 2,500 taxis, livery vehicles and limousines. In the process, the county would gain $340,000 in extra revenue.
The county would be able to set standards for insurance and inspections and provide regulatory oversight over cabs and limos to improve safety and reduce the competition from illegal gypsy cabs.
