'A Taste of Long Island' Gets Go-Ahead

Site will offer Long Island foods and commercial kitchen space for rent.

A combination food market and commercial kitchen rental won Village Board approval Monday night.

Jim Thompson and his daughter, Courtney, said A Taste of Long Island on the east side of Main Street would offer Long Island-produced foods for sale, including baked goods like cookies, pies, cakes, chocolates and candies, to barbeque sauces and salsas, to honey, jams, jellies and preserves.

Approval is subject to licensing by the building department.

The Thompsons said they hoped to open the site by mid-May.

The site will provide start-up and small-scale food producers with the ability to rent private shifts at the commercial kitchen facility to operate their food business without having to risk a large amount of money to open their own production facility.

When the board asked for public comment, two speakers who said they ran a business in the back of a neighboring barbershop expressed concern about access to loading space from the street. One offered a photo of the space in question. But the board had questions about their business and so the process for approving the new site continued.

The Thompsons said they are considering running a farmers' market, as well.

A member of the board said, “Welcome to the village and we wish you much success.”
