Video: Farmingdale Celebrates Memorial Day
The Village celebrated with the annual parade and the unveiling of a new Civil War monument.
Farmingdale's Memorial Day celebrations expanded beyond the annual parade this year - the Farmingdale-Bethpage Historical Society gifted the Village Green with a new Civil War monument.
"I hope that especially our veterans, that we met your expectations," said Farmingdale Mayor George Starkie. "I hope you ladies and gentleman enjoy and come down and reflect and thank a veteran."
The Civil War Monument is meant to honor the memory of the young men from Farmingdale who served in the Union Army or U.S. Navy during the conflict of 1861 to 1865. The Historical Society raised $10,000 to complete the project and materials were donated by various groups.

There is also a new "Memorial Walkway," in which the the World War I, II, Korea and Vietnam monuments were relocated in chronological order. The area will be receiving add trees, flowers and shrubs as further enhancements, courtesy of Parkland Funds and grants.
The annual parade featured veterans, members of the fire department and local community groups like the Girl Scouts and the Knights of Columbus.

Farmingdale Deputy Mayor and Trustee Patricia Christiansen said that she thinks it is important to celebrate Memorial Day in Farmingdale.
"We can join with the rest of the nation in just paying tribute to all who served on our behalf to preserve the freedoms that were given by our forefathers," she said.
