Five Towns Schools To Get Nearly $900,000 State Aid Increase

The money will help keep tax increases lower in the 2017-18 school year.

Under the recently passed New York budget, school districts across the state are going to be getting more aid. The Hewlett-Woodmere and Lawrence school districts are no different, and will see a combined increase of nearly $900,000 from the state.

The more money that comes from the state and other revenue sources, the less school districts have to raise through taxes. Hewlett-Woodmere is going to see a total increase of $762,816, or 7.62 percent over its current funding. Lawrence is getting an increase of $195,979, or 1.69 percent.

"Senator Todd Kaminsky and Assemblywoman Melissa Miller continue to prove themselves to be great supporters of our school community with a deep understanding of our needs," said Lawrence Superintendent Gary Schall. "In a time of scarce resources throughout the state, this significant increase in state aid for two years in a row demonstrates our Senator's commitment to our children."

The increases bring Hewlett-Woodmere's total state aid to $10,773,353 and Lawrence's to $11,806,807.

"Providing a high-quality education for our children is our top priority, and strengthening the school district is central to ensuring that the Five Towns remain a wonderful place to live and raise a family,” said Senator Todd Kaminsky. “I am proud to have helped secure more funding for Five Towns schools so that our students can have the best learning opportunities available. Importantly, the more money we secure from Albany, the less Long Island taxpayers are called on to shoulder the financial burden.”

"Investing in education will help open more doors of opportunity for our children," said Assemblywoman Melissa Miller. "The increased aid that I helped deliver will help create new opportunities for our kids to succeed and demonstrates my strong commitment to our students, parents and teachers throughout the 20th Assembly district. Specifically, the funding secured for Lawrence Schools is the result of the strong advocacy of Superintendent Gary Schall, and I look forward to our continuing relationship to ensure teachers and students both have the resources they need to succeed."
