A trio of Hewlett students were published for their research in the March edition of the Oxford Journal of Student Scholarship.
HEWLETT, NY — As students around the country slip into “senioritis,” a trio from G.W. Hewlett High School have ramped up their academic efforts, securing published places in the Oxford Journal of Student Scholarship’s March 2026 issue.
District officials announced that Alexa laPaglia, Arielle Kauderer and Sebastian Mendoza-Reyes had research pieces published after external review from Oxford University experts.
In Mendoza-Reyes’ case, it was a study of the biomarkers that could allow for earlier detection of acute kidney injuries that could improve the medical outcomes for kidney patients whose injuries are noticed sooner.

For LaPaglia and Kauderer, it was research into the impact of blue light wavelengths on plant growth, specifically in salty soil. The findings, district officials said, could have important applications in the agricultural field, particularly in areas where salty soil makes it difficult to produce food.
District officials said the research was conducted under the guidance of science research coordinator Terrence Bissoondial, who mentored them through the development and execution of their studies.

The Oxford journal, according to its own website, “exists to provide motivated secondary and university students with an accessible platform to share their research with a wider academic community.”
That platform, the Oxford journal said, promotes academic rigor, intellectual curiosity and scholarly integrity.
