Lawrence UFSD Keeps Students Engaged in Reading with Family Literacy Night
LAWRENCE, NEW YORK (OCTOBER 2021) — The Lawrence Union Free School District recently hosted a “Family Literacy Night” event at Lawrence Primary School to help students learn about the importance of literacy and to help parents learn different ways reading can be supported at home while students are not in the classroom.
Students joined the event with their families and were guided by staff members to a variety of activities including selecting from an assortment of books that were donated by the Book Fairies, signing up for a library card through the Peninsula Public Library, shopping the school’s Scholastic Book Fair, and of course - taking the time to open a book and just read.
Lawrence Primary School thanked the Book Fairies, a Long Island based non-profit organization, for their generous donation of books that the students were able to take home to further build their at-home libraries. The Book Fairies mission is to donate new and gently used books to libraries, schools and organizations throughout the metropolitan New York area in order to foster the love of reading for Long Island students.
The Peninsula Public Library was also thanked by Lawrence Primary School for joining the event to support District families in registering for a library card and providing information as to what new learning opportunities are available to students through the library.
“Thank you to all of our school faculty and staff for their continued support and efforts,” said Kristen Mcloughlin, principal of Lawrence Primary School. “They truly worked hard to create this wonderful, literacy-filled community event for our students and their families!”
