LAWRENCE, NY — A man, who was stopped for multiple traffic violations, tried to get away from police and assaulted an officer, detectives said.

Dwayne Gordon, 20, was pulled over just before 1 a.m. Friday near the intersection of Route 878 and Rockaway Turnpike, police said.

Gordon, who was driving a 2010 Mercedes Benz with a Texas license plate, was observed committing multiple traffic infractions, a police release said.

As they placed him into the vehicle for a second time, Gordon is accused of violently resisting arrest, including headbutting an officer, detectives said.

The officer was treated at an area hospital for a cut to his face.

Gordon was scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Hempstead on second-degree assault, second-degree escape, second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument and the multiple traffic infractions.
