Lawrence UFSD Keeps Students Engaged Over Summer Break with Summer Reading

LAWRENCE, NEW YORK — The Lawrence Union Free School District recently hosted a “Midsummer Reading Check In” event at Lawrence Middle School to celebrate young readers. The event consisted of a book fair that featured brand new books that students could read before the start of school in September.

Students showed off their summer reading journals to their building principals to display how much they enjoyed reading over the summer. All students in attendance had the opportunity to select 2 free books of their choosing to add to their home library, enjoyed snacks and received a free t-shirt.

Books provided to students were donated by The Book Fairies, a not-for-profit organization that collects reading materials for people in need throughout metropolitan New York. The reading materials foster literacy and academic success, provide a respite from personal struggles, and nurture a love of reading across age groups.

The Lawrence Union Free School District understands that summer reading is critical for students to retain knowledge and skills learned in the previous school year and is a crucial part of the District’s mission to educate the whole child—academically, physically and mentally.
