Police: 3 Firefighters Injured, 1 Critically in Woodmere Fire

More than 200 firefighters battled blaze in basement of empty Central Avenue home Friday morning.

A firefighter is in critical but stable condition and two others were injured in an enormous Woodmere house fire Friday morning, according to Nassau County Police.

The fire broke out in an empty house on Central Avenue at 3:56 a.m., cops said.

More than 200 firefighters and 20 pieces of apparatus from neighboring departments battled the blaze, police said.

Responders from Woodmere, Inwood, Lawrence-Cedarhurst, East Rockaway, Elmont, Hewlett, Lakeview, Lynbrook, Malverne, Meadowmere, Oceanside, Rockville Centre, and Valley Stream were at the scene.

Two firefighters sustained minor injuries and did not require medical attention at the scene, cops said.

A third firefighter fell and went into cardiac arrest, police said. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he is listed in critical but stable condition, cops said.

“It is not clear if he fell through the floor or was in the basement and debris fell on him, trapping him,” Assistant Nassau County Fire Marshal Michael F. Uttaro said, according to Newsday.

No criminality is suspected in the fire. The investigation is ongoing.
