Sanitary District No. 1 Provides Useful Information For Residents' Spring Clean-Ups
Useful tips to ensure your trash is hauled away

Sanitary District #1 is providing tips to help residents with their spring cleaning efforts by disseminating important information about the proper disposal of various items found within their home and yard. Different items often times require specific methods for disposal. Larger items will typically require scheduling a special pick-up.
“As the weather gets nicer and we get motivated to clean-up our homes and yards, it is important that residents have the information needed to properly discard their unwanted items,” said James Vilardi, Chairman of the Sanitary District #1’s Board of Commissioners. “When residents need to discard things that are not the typical household garbage, they need to make sure these items are properly packaged for disposal. This will guarantee their trash gets taken away and our operations run smoothly.”
All garbage must not exceed 75 pounds and must be stored in a 32 gallon or smaller garbage can with a proper cover. Containers in excess of 32 gallons will not be collected. Every resident is encouraged to keep heavy rubbish, such as tree clips, leaves, grass clippings, etc., separated from their home garbage.

Tree branches, hedges, bush clippings, etc. must be tied with cord into bundles that are no longer than four-feet by two-feet in diameter. Grass clippings and leaves must be placed in a metal container, basket or heavy plastic bag – cardboard boxes cannot be used to dispose of this waste.
If a resident would like to discard furniture, appliances, metal, etc., they are required to call the District at (516) 239-5600 to schedule a pick-up for these items to be hauled away by special equipment.
