Flushing Town Hall

At FTH this Spring, Jazz Jam bandleader Carol Sudhalter brings together musicians, ages 83 to 91, to share a combined musical history that stretches from Duke Ellington's orchestra to Frank Sinatra's touring band, from the Chet Baker Quartet to 25 years on the house band of Sesame Street.
On Friday, May 8, Flushing Town Hall presents NY Jazz Legends: The Over 80s—an extraordinary evening of jazz standards, original compositions, and first-hand stories from some of New York City's most enduring musical voices.
Led by Carol Sudhalter (83), the sextet features renowned pianist Bertha Hope (88), whose career began in the 1950s LA jazz clubs; drummer Steve Little (90), who recorded with Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton; bassist and humorist Jay Leonhart (86), who has performed with Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, and Luciano Pavarotti; vocalist Keisha St. Joan (86), often compared to Sarah Vaughan, who began her career with the Harlem Opera Group at 17; and special guest vibraphonist Warren Chiasson (91), named by the New York Times as one of the six greatest vibraphonists of the last half century.
Between performances, band members will share brief oral histories and stories from careers that collectively span over three centuries of American jazz. Come, listen, and enjoy!

Join us for a special edition of our Monthly Jazz Jam as we celebrate the legacy of Frank Sinatra. Our Jazz Jams are open to professional jazz musicians, graduate students studying jazz, music educators and serious hobbyists, our Monthly Jazz Jams invites musicians to perform at Flushing Town Hall. All are welcome, regardless of instrument (vocalists, too!). Our Steinway baby grand and drum kit are available at each Jam.&nbsp;FTH's Jazz Jam house band leader, Carol Sudhalter, plays flute, baritone and tenor sax and has been running our Monthly Jazz Jams since 2016. She is joined by Joe Vincent Tranchina (piano), Eric Lemon (bass) and Scott Neumann (drums). Each house band member brings over 40 years of Jazz experience to the jam!&nbsp;

Orchestra of St. Luke's (OSL), joined by baritone Joseph Parrish, celebrates the friendship between Harry T. Burleigh, the pioneering Black American composer, and Antonín Dvořák, the renowned Czech composer that began when the two men met in 1892. Their collaboration, rooted in spirituals and folk music, helped shape a distinctly American sound that continues to inspire us today. &nbsp;
OSL&nbsp;brings that story to the Flushing Town Hall, joined by baritone Joseph Parrish in a program that weaves Burleigh's original songs and spiritual arrangements with Dvořák's Violin Sonatina in G Major--music born from the same conversation, performed together in Queens.&nbsp;
This concert is part of Five Boroughs Music Festival's season finale tour, with OSL performing the same program across all five NYC boroughs: Hostos Community College (BRONX), Snug Harbor Cultural Center (STATEN ISLAND), Brooklyn Public Library, New York Public Library (MANHATTAN), and Flushing Town Hall (QUEENS).&nbsp;

Experience the Tuvergen Band and the distinctive musical and cultural traditions of Mongolia, with its deep connection to the natural world. Come and hear for yourself how the country's traditional music reflects the sounds of wind, water, animals, and the expansive grasslands of the steppe. At the heart of this tradition is throat singing (khöömii), a mesmerizing vocal technique in which a single voice produces multiple tones at once, echoing the layered harmonies of the surrounding environment.
Tuvergen Band features Tamir Hargana, an award-winning throat singer and multi-instrumentalist; Naizal Hargana, a master of the morin khuur who was principal and leading soloist of the Inner Mongolian Youth Choir’s Morin Khuur Ensemble and is known for bridging Mongolian and Western styles; and Brent Roman, an ethnomusicologist and former Cirque du Soleil performer whose global drum kit and didgeridoo add rich texture to the group’s “modern nomadic music”.
Throughout the program, audiences will have the chance to try basic vocal techniques and rhythm exercises. Flushing Town Hall teaching artist Ling Tang will also join the band, improvising with their music while demonstrating essential Inner Mongolian dance movements such as horse-riding steps and the use of unique props like chopsticks and wine cups. Together, they will lead everyone in a lively grassland-inspired music and dance finale, a joyful dance party. This event was originally offered as part of FTH's 2026 Lunar New Year programming.
