Trombonist, composer, and arranger John Yao and his big band push modern big band jazz into bold new territory, blending swing, Latin, funk, and contemporary influences. Their latest release, Points in Time, celebrates Yao's 20-year career in NYC and the band's long-awaited return after a decade hiatus. A 2023 DownBeat Critics Poll Rising Star, Yao has performed with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, and collaborated with artists including Paquito D'Rivera and Kurt Elling.

Vincent Herring and Steve Turre unite two of jazz's most distinctive voices, blending hard-bop fire, deep swing, and fearless improvisation to honor saxophonist and composer John Coltrane who would have been 100 this year. Acclaimed saxophonist Herring has performed with legends including Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, and Freddie Hubbard, while Grammy-winning trombonist and pioneering trumpeter Turre brings Afro-Cuban and Brazilian influences shaped through collaborations with Ray Charles, McCoy Tyner, and Herbie Hancock. Together, they deliver performances filled with rhythmic energy, expressive depth, and uncompromising swing.

Storyteller Mara McEwin and percussionist Roderick Jackson weave together tales from around the globe that celebrate teamwork, collaboration, and resilience. Drawing on the spirit of the beautiful game, the performance brings life to the lessons of the field—strategy, perseverance, and the joy of working together.

 <li>At our craft table, create a patriotic keepsake to commemorate this historic anniversary. The craft project is appropriate for kids (and adults!) of all ages.</li>
 <li>Try your hand at family-friendly outdoor games including "Ball &amp; Cup” and toy hoops!</li>
 <li>Please Note: All children must be accompanied by an adult throughout the duration of the event.</li>

 <li>Learn about the unique history of Bowne House, built over 100 years before American Independence! Our educator will take you through centuries of <a href="https://www.bownehouse.org/ourhistory" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Bowne House history</a>- including what life was like for the family during the era of the American Revolution. Visitors will tour three period rooms and listen to stories of Bowne family history and lore, while viewing rare collection items and copies of archival documents.</li>

 <li>1:00pm to 1:30pm</li>
 <li>Listen as our educator reads aloud historical documents related to early Flushing and Bowne family history.</li>
 </ul>

Treehouse Shakers Presents: Let’s Work Together! is an immersive, movement-filled performance that invites young audiences to explore the power of collaboration and resilience. Storyteller Mara McEwin and percussionist Roderick Jackson weave together world folklore and live percussion music, bringing life stories of team spirit, shared goals, and the life lessons found in the games we play. Young participants will learn movement and dance inspired by soccer and team play, transforming a performance into a joyful, full-body experience.
This session can be enjoyed on its own or as a companion to July 18’s Let’s Get Moving!
Perfect for children 4 to 8 years old. Siblings welcome too.

Born in Mexico City and raised in New York, he is the founder and artistic director of the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra and Belongo, a nonprofit dedicated to the performance, education, and preservation of Afro-Latin music. Through his acclaimed recordings, collaborations, and teaching, O'Farrill continues to champion cultural identity, social justice, and the transformative power of music.&nbsp;
