Name: A Ticket to Freedom: the Bowne House Archives and the Underground Railroad

To mark National Underground Railroad Month, the Bowne House Archives will showcase the historic documents that tell the story of abolition, manumission, and the Underground Railroad at Bowne House. A highlight of our collection will be on display: a letter carried to Bowne House resident William Bowne Parsons 176 years ago this month by a freedom-seeker on the Underground Railroad. This rare surviving document connects Bowne House and the broader Flushing community to a multiracial network of abolitionists and the aspirations of those who self-emancipated from slavery.
Jackson’s talk will explore the time and place of the letter’s writing, profile the Bowne House residents who acted as conductors, and share our still-evolving map of the anonymous freedom-seeker’s route to safety. A question-and-answer period will follow. Talk and Q&amp;A will run one hour, with an optional self-guided tour of Bowne House to follow.

This will be an incredible evening of global bass and Latin fusion! Pahua (’/pa-wah/) is a singer, composer, percussionist, DJ, and producer from Mexico City who mixes Caribbean and folkloric beats with electronics and percussion, creating a border-busting dance-party soundtrack rooted in ancient rhythms and melodies. From Brazilian funk and dancehall to South American folkloric music, cumbia, and global bass, Pahua’s music will keep you on your feet all night long!&nbsp;
With a nuanced approach to Folktronica, this co-founder of the neocumbia experimental Sotomayor Music project delves into tribal Latin rhythms, texturing them with airy house music, while her arrangements—packed with great vibes—reveal cumbia, Afrobeat, kuduro, dembow, and dancehall influences. Her voice floats amidst these finely tuned sounds, sometimes as an airy whisper and at others as a front-and-center singer that invites you into her deceptively complex aural world.&nbsp;
Join us before the concert for a special pre-show talk (details coming soon!) and stick around to dance the night away on our theater dance floor. Mexican eats will also be available for sale.&nbsp;
About the Artist&nbsp;
Pahua (’/pa-wah/) is a singer, composer, percussionist, DJ, and producer from Mexico City who mixes Caribbean and folkloric beats with electronics and percussion. With early roots as a Mariachi singer, she is a rising star of the Latin Wave and co-founder of the neocumbia experimental Sotomayor Music project. Her solo work twists traditional Latin rhythms with subtle electronics, drawing from Brazilian funk, dancehall, South American folkloric music, cumbia, Afrobeat, kuduro, and dembow. Her voice floats between airy whispers and commanding leads, inviting listeners into a deceptively complex aural world of self-love and empowerment.&nbsp;
