The Bukharian Jewish community is one of the oldest Jewish communities worldwide, dating back 2,500 years. In the Central Asian cities, such as Bukhara and Samarqand, where they lived, Jews were renowned for their rich musical traditions. Since 1989, the Bukharian Jews have left Central Asia en masse, taking their distinctive musical heritage with them. Evan Rapport, Assistant Prof. of Ethnomusicology at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, will speak about the culture of the Bukharian immigrant community around us, including their music and dance, and on the transformations that have taken place in Bukharian culture over the past two decades. In addition, he will perform on the tanbur, the long-necked lute used in Bukharian classical music.
