Patch Asks: How Do You Pick a Pre-School?
The Forest Hills Patch Family Council wants to know how you made the decision for your children.

Picking a good preschool is the first big decision every parent makes as they begin to think about early childhood education for their kids. Questions such as when to start the separation, who the caregivers will be and the philosophy of the school can be a long and emotional process for parents.
Forest Hills provides many excellent options for early socialization, learning and religious experiences. We asked local families what was most important for them when picking a preschool and advice for what parents should be asking before enrolling.

Basically, ask yourself the basic questions "who, what, where, when, why, and how." Who is it for, you or the child? What do you want out of it; a break, education, social time? Where is it located? Consider travel in all weather? When are they in session; start time, end time, vacations, holidays, schedule of other children and work?

Why are you sending the child to preschool? Peer pressure, child asking to go, need to work? How much will it cost? Be sure to visit during hours of operation to see how the children already in the program are behaving. Listen to your child's reaction, excitement or dread. Remember, preschool is not a necessary part of a child's life. Betty Chen
