Around 3:43 p.m. on Monday, a 57-year-old man was behind the wheel of a yellow school bus when he made a right turn onto 72nd Street from Third Avenue and hit Elizabeth Hyman, 81, who was walking across the street in a marked crosswalk, according to the NYPD.

Police said that the 81-year-old was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The driver, who police said stayed at the scene at the time of the accident, failed to comply with state law by not yielding to Hyman who was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk.

According to police, however, as Wednesday no arrests have been made and the investigation remains ongoing.

The crash is not the first time this year that an elderly Queens woman was fatally hit by a driver while out on a walk, during a year when traffic deaths have surged to almost the highest level in a decade.

In May, Lopamudra Desai, 82, was crossing the street in Bayside when she was plowed over by a driver behind the wheel of an SUV. Then, in July, Ning Peng, 70, was walking on the sidewalk when a pickup truck driver backed into her.

And, the intersection on the Upper East has proven to be an especially dangerous crossing.

Since 2011, there have been at least 32 crashes at the same intersection, according to city data. Forty-one people have been injured — including 16 pedestrians, 20 drivers and five cyclists. One pedestrian was killed, not including Hyman.
