Getting a Pothole Fixed in New York City: The Secret to Getting the Pothole Fixed Fast
You should dial 311 or click here to file an online report for the Department of Transportation. Yet that is not enough to get the City to pay attention or to move quickly. The problem is that a call to 311 does not create a legal obligation for the City to repair that defect.
You want to make the City legally liable to fix the pothole and that puts pressure on the City to repair the problem quickly. How do you do it? Under New York City Law, putting the complaint in writing puts the City on notice about the pothole. The City then has 15 days to repair the pothole. If the City fails to repair the pothole within 15 days, the City becomes liable for any damages caused by the pothole.
Therefore, to make it much more likely that the pothole will be repaired quickly, you must put the complaint in writing and send it to the Department of Transportation. Send the letter with the information listed above to:
Commissioner of the Department of Transportation
New York City Department of Transportation
55 Water Street
New York, NY 10041
