$3M For Affordable Housing In Brooklyn Is In BP's Budget
The investment will preserve and develop 550 affordable housing units in Fort Greene, Brownsville, East Flatbush and Coney Island.

FORT GREENE, BROOKLYN — Hanson Place Community Plaza will get 100 new affordable housing units thanks to a $3 million housing investment in Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams' budget for this year. The allocation will help develop and preserve 550 affordable housing units in Fort Greene, Brownsville, East Flatbush and Coney Island.
Adams announced the investment with an event this week, where ceremonial checks were given out to the organizations that will get the funding. The projects are each part of his Faith-Based Development Initiative, which partners with the borough's houses of worship to bring affordable housing throughout Brooklyn.
“Brooklynites need more than a home for the holidays; our borough needs affordable housing year-round,” Adams said. “We need to protect our vulnerable populations fighting to stay in their homes, like the elderly, the poor, veterans, and the disabled. People should not have to be forced to leave their homes, because they cannot afford to live in their neighborhoods where they have lived for decades.”

The Fort Greene project will use $500,000 of Adams' investment to develop 100 units and a community facility space at the Hanson Place Community Plaza, overseen by the Hanson Place Church Support Corporation.
In Brownsville, Adams' allocation will go to two organizations. Love Fellowship Tabernacle will get $1 million to construct a 189-unit, mixed-use, 11-story building on Pacific Street and Catholic Charities Progress of Peoples Development Corporation will get $526,000 to build communal and green roof spaces for phase two of an existing project, that will bring 102 units.

BEL Community Housing in East Flatbush will get $500,000 to to build 89 units of low-income housing for seniors at Bishop Philius and Helen Nicolas Senior Residence. Sea Gate's Abraham Residence I, a 75-unit living facility for formerly homeless seniors, also got $500,000.
“Catholic Charities Progress of Peoples Development Corporation is grateful for the support from Borough President Adams for the ability to develop more than 135 affordable supportive senior housing units in the Ocean Hill-Brownsville area,” said Monsignor Alfred LoPinto, president and CEO at Catholic Charities Progress of Peoples Development Corporation. “A safe, affordable home is crucial to providing stability to the most vulnerable in our society."
