CKO Kickboxing Clinton Hill, located at 45 Waverly Avenue, will be opening in early November. The high quality, cross-training gym provides a family friendly setting to residents of Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, and Bed Stuy who are looking for a convenient location and an alternative to large chain gyms, Pilates, yoga, martial arts, cross-fit and spinning classes.
As longtime residents of Clinton Hill, Gineen Finch and Vlad Acevedo are well aware of the lack of gym options in the neighborhood. That is one reason they are so excited to be bringing CKO Kickboxing to the neighborhood.
"Vlad and I are both very active and have always had a passion for health and fitness. We have had memberships at many different gyms but always wished there was an option closer to home. After our son was born on April 1 of this year, we decided it was time to take matters into our own hands! I had been working in television for the past 10+ years. I always loved my career but wanted to find something that would allow me to spend more time with our son and directly help other people. It was also very important that whatever we did have a local impact," said Finch.

"We love the Fort Greene/Clinton Hill neighborhood and want to raise our family here. So we knew that we wanted to open a small business that would be health focused and would make a positive contribution to our community. When Gineen and I began discussing options we quickly decided that opening our own CKO was the perfect choice for us," said Acevedo.
"We want our gym to feel like you're walking into a friend's house. We want to get to know all of our members personally. We want to know what their goals are and learn what motivates each individual so that we can help them acheive those goals," added Finch.

During CKO classes each member works out on their own heavy bag. CKO is a no contact gym; there is no sparring or martial arts training. CKO is fitness kickboxing. Punches and kicks on the heavy bag are combined with cross-training and high-intensity interval training (AKA HIIT or Tabata). Classes are structured so that everyone can work at their own pace, making each class appropriate for all fitness levels. CKO instructors keep the punches and kicks basic to focus on the fitness aspect of the workout rather than the martial art itself.
"Our gym brings personal training to a group setting to give you the benefits of personalized attention without the impact on your wallet. As a member of both the flagship location in Hoboken and the very first franchise location in Carroll Gardens, I have personally experienced the incredible benefits of the CKO workout. It's the best full-body workout I've ever done," said Finch. "I saw results so quickly by going to 3-4 classes per week. And once I reach a goal I can always take my workout to the next level so that I don't plateau. Every class is so much fun and it's very cathartic to wail on a heavy bag for an hour. I always found it to be the best therapy after a long day at the office. We are so excited to be pursuing our passion and can't wait to welcome all of our members!"
