Barclays Center to Play Ball With Large Soda Ban

Though the ban on super-size drinks doesn't take effect until March, the Barclays Center announced that they would be complying when they open later this month.

On the heels of the passage of Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s large sugary drink ban, Bruce Ratner, developer of the Barclays Center, announced that the arena would voluntarily comply with smaller cup sizes starting when it opens later this month, says the New York Observer.

“As the newest sports and entertainment venue in Brooklyn, Barclays Center is thrilled to work with the Mayor and the city to help achieve the mayor’s public health goals,” Ratner said in a statement put out by Bloomberg. “New York City has set a standard for the country and the world when it comes to public health and we are very proud to be the first to adopt the standards for sugary beverages in our new venue.”

“I raise a 16 ounce cup and toast Barclays for joining us today and implementing this plan 6 months ahead of schedule,” Bloomberg said. “This is a game-changing vote and the new Barclays Center is on the winning side.”

The ban on sugary drinks over 16 ounces was , though changes won't be put into effect until March.

The Observer says that there are rumors that Bloomberg may turn his attention to large alcoholic beverages next—a sticky subject at the new arena. Previously, drama arose when Barclays Center officials wanted to serve beer and liquor until 2 a.m., though the liquor license included a stipulation that .
