Unionized Barista Gets Cash After Termination

A Park Slope barista won a $15,500 settlement for an allegedly unlawful termination after his union affiliation was revealed. Jeff Baurer said that he was in good standing with the management at Ozzie’s café until they discovered that he was a member of the Industrial Workers of the World. In the wake of the settlement, the café gets the “Scarlet Letter” treatment: a notice must be posted in the store saying that Ozzie’s cannot crack down on any union-related activities.

‘Bored to Death’ Back in the Neighborhood

Jonathan Ames’ love letter to Brooklyn, “Bored to Death” was back in the neighborhood last week filming for its third season on HBO. Carroll Garden’s ubiquitous editor even got a great shot of the star of the show, Jason Schwartzman, on the way to a shoot at Bookcourt on Court Street. (He even told her he felt “cold!”) It’s not the first time the show has shot in that part of Brooklyn. Previous episodes have featured prominent locales in Boerum Hill and Gowanus.

New Chef at Troubled Restaurant

A new chef will run the kitchen at Dean Street after the previous celebrity chef abruptly departed as a result of clashes with the owner. Local resident Mike Franzetti, who previously ran the kitchen at Stuzzicheria in Tribeca, will now be in charge. He’s taking the place of Nate Smith, who helped open the eatery in January, only to depart a month later.
