AQ/ArtQuake is a group of 10 internationally known artists who have contributed to a portfolio of original contemporary prints available for collection. ArtQuake honors Haiti's history in artistic leadership and addresses the impact of the January 12, 2010 earthquake on the nation's visual art community. The portfolios of ten original prints will be available for sale. Proceeds to benefit artists of Kolektif Atis Jakmèl (KOLAJ).   This collaboration has already raised and distributed $1,700.

This evening will also feature a performance by Gabrielle Civil!

 

Gabrielle Civil is a black woman poet, conceptual and performance artist, originally from Detroit, MI. Over the last ten years, she has premiered over twenty original performance art works in the United States (Minneapolis, Chicago, NY), The Gambia, Puerto Rico and Mexico. Performance art from her 2008-2009 Fulbright project "In and Out of Place: Making Black Feminist Performance Art in Mexico" included "Muño (fantasía de la negrita)" (premiered at the Performagia Festival in Tlaxcala, Mexico) and "In and Out of Place" (premiered at Museo ex Teresa arte actual). Civil recently collaborated with Haitian artist Vladimir Cybil Charlier-Juste on the artist book Tourist Art and is a delegate for Ayiti Resurrect, a grass-roots organization helping to address "the psychological and spiritual healing of the survivors of the January 12, 2010 earthquake in Haiti." Swallow the Fish, her critical/creative text on race, body and performance art, is currently in circulation for publication. She teaches at St. Catherine University in St. Paul, MN. The aim of all her work is to open up space.

January 7, 2012 : Printmaking workshop 

 "How Can a Print be an Original?"

 

The ArtQuake portfolio consists of 10 original prints made using a variety of printmaking techniques. This workshop will explore 2 of the more traditional, low-tech techniques, enabling participants to create their own artwork or original designs.

January 10, 2012: Community Workshop: featuring Regine Romain and Michel Luc

 

Join us for an evening community workshop at Five Myles Gallery co-facilitated by artist/education Regine Romain and activist/educator Michele Luc exploring the significance of the Haitian Declaration of Independence.


January 12, 2012: An n' Pale | Café Conversations: ak Regine Romain [Photographer|Educator|Writer|Curator| Performer] followed by a Rasanbleman open community forum closing with a musical performance by Val Jeanty honoring the victims of January 12, 2010 7.0 earthquake in Haiti.

Regine Romain is a photo-anthro-journalist of Haitian descent, who fuses her interests in travel and culture to explore both spiritual and tangible worlds. She is also a writer, performer and educator who teaches photography, poetry, multi-media studies and global history, seeking to stimulate artistic expression, critical inquiry and social activism in her students.

Régine Romain is the Founder and Director the Urban PhotoPoets project, the Brooklyn Photo Salon and Mami Wata Healing Arts. She is currently an A.I.R. Gallery 2011 - 2012 Fellow and the editor of Diaspora Diaries: An Educators Guide to MoCADA Artists. Régine Romain received her Bachelor of Science in International Studies from Bowie State University and in 2008 acquired a Masters in Photography & Urban Culture from Goldsmiths, University of London. Regine Romain lives in Brooklyn, New York with her daughter.  

 

Ongoing Project: Installation-Enstalasyon

 

As a tribute to our brothers and sisters who perished during the January 2010 Earthquake in Haiti, you are invited to email photographs of people who perished and/or send a written message of up to a page.  The images and documents received will be incorporated into an interactive installation at theAQ/Art Quake exhibit at Five Myles Gallery. The exhibit will open on Friday, December 16th and run thru January 15th.
