BAMcinématek Presents: Boris Godounov

Directed by Andrzej Zulawski
With Ruggero Raimondi

(1989) 115min, 35mm

Zulawski’s unorthodox staging of Modest Mussorgsky’s proto-Modernist Russian opera masterpiece chronicles the brief but tumultuous reign of the brutal 16th-century tsar (bass Raimondi)— marked by political intrigue, backstabbing, and assassinations. With a cinematic dynamism via his endlessly roving kino-eye, Zulawski amps up the work’s politics and charges the theatrical settings.

In Russian with English subtitles
