El Hadj, a postgraduate student living in Paris, has plans to return to his home of Senegal and become a teacher, and in turn, help rebuild the country’s infrastructure. But when he embarks on a love affair with Delphine, a white French woman, he finds himself in an existential crisis—questioning not only his own position, but that of Senegal and, by extension, Africa.
