Davies transports us to rural 1940s Georgia in this adaptation of John Kennedy Toole’s novel, told through the forlorn eyes of David (Tierney, at age 15, and Bell, at age 10), whose only salve in his troubled, impoverished life arrives in the form of his Aunt Mae (Rowlands, in a powerfully understated performance), a flamboyant swing-band singer in a red dress. “…like watching an Edward Hopper or Thomas Hart Benton painting come to life” (San Francisco Chronicle).
