Part of the BAMcinématek series Hysterical Excess: Discovering Andrzej Zulawski
Fri, Mar 16, 2012 at 6:50, 9:15pm
Directed by Andrzej Zulawski
With Wojciech Pszoniak, Leszek Teleszynski
(1972) 119min, 35mm
Promptly banned in the director’s home country upon its release, Zulawski’s shocking second feature, set in 18th-century Poland, opens amid a cacophony of violence. Emerging from the carnage is a young man named Jakub (Teleszynski), a hostage nun, and a stranger clad in black who guides them through a surreal and foreboding wasteland of depravity. “Imagine Network's Howard Beale, pumped up on amphetamines and two tons of cocaine, and wielding a straight razor when he proclaims, ‘I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna take this anymore!’ That's the height of misappropriated righteous anger Zulawski pitches his film at” (Jeremah Kipp, Slant Magazine).
