Part of Senior Cinema

Directed by John Sayles.
With Joe Morton.
(1984) 108min

A mute, black alien (Joe Morton) escapes slavery on his home planet and crash lands in Harlem where he’s at first viewed with suspicion but gradually wins over the locals with his easygoing manner and displays of telekinesis (helpful, as it turns out, in repairing video games). This quirky, low-budget sci-fi yarn with a heartfelt political conscience is alternately hilarious and poignant, with a sensitive, Keaton-esque silent performance from Joe Morton.
